Lex Luthor and The Flash
I set out last night with two others – I shall call them Lex Luthor and The Flash. Lex is pictured below and is easily recognisable thanks to his criminally insane smooth head. Check the menacing pose…

The Flash is not the usual comic book hero though – in fact his pace was all together slow and easily captured, even at night time shutter speeds. No, this Flash gets his name due to his almost fetish like love of Flash based websites. During the evenings many strolls talk turned geek, specifically presenting photos in a flash based website. Lex and I both despise this for its seriously hampered usability. The Flash however disagrees, but he is a designer and knows not of practicality
Anyway back to the evening. We headed east initially looking for a previously visited gypsy camp along the river – alas all we found was a Watpac construction fence on the site of the former gypsy camp. Damn progress. Moving on we went to the warehouse from the previous post since it was close and The Flash had not been there before. We stuck to the emptier of the two adjoining warehouses this time having gotten our fill of the rubble filled one next door. I tried (unsuccessfully) to take a shot of the door barricaded with massive logs last time – but this time put in some back lighting which made the shot passable. Prepare to enter, The Scary Door…..

The above shot ended up being mono-toned due to the varying different colours present. There was orange, yellow and red reflected in through a large set of louvers. That plus the white torch light made it look confused so mono-toned it ended up.
I also re-took the barrel and tire shot from last time but with water glistening on everything and a diffused orange torch angled in from the front right.

After the warehouse we stopped briefly at a city rail bridge but there was little room to move and frame a shot (without getting squashed by a train) and I ended up with nothing decent. I did learn that trains going over a bridge are very loud up close though. At that point we dropped The Flash off and made one last stop near home at yet another rail bridge, this time focusing on the underside. I quite like this shot of Lex with just the right amount of light spilling in from the left.

There is a series of very old disused pylons in amongst the modern ones, no doubt from a previous bridge. One of them had a great old painted sign on it which I tried to put into a shot below. Again space to setup the tripod was limited but I am happy at any rate as I don’t think there is a better shot to be had. The sign was in heavy shadow and it is lit with a diffused orange torch.

With the time by then in the AM I retired home and Lex went into the night to taunt Superman.

Very nice! The scary door come out very well indeed, really impressive. Cash Orders is well done, too – it achieves the sense of context that my elevated shot sadly did not.
Yeah have to say it is the best set I have had for some time. I also liked the top shot of you due to the crispness of the silhouette.
That 17-40 really does handle flare well. The old sign shot is with no hood directly into two light sources with a UV filter still on!
Wow, that is some good flare handling. I took my UV filter off, then ended up jamming it in my pocked with all sorts of other things, when I, er, went for that jog, late in the evening.
A fine jog it was.
I particularly like the scary door but, most amusingly, I think the second photo of Lex makes him look normally tall!
I see what you mean, shooting from below does make Lex look tall. So will shooting from above make him look like a midget? Now there is something to try for next time.
